Woman with PKU may be at risk of complications, including miscarriage, if they don’t follow a PKU meal plan during their childbearing years. There’s also a chance that the unborn baby will be exposed to high levels of phenylalanine. This can lead to various problems in the baby, including:
  • intellectual disabilities
  • heart defects
  • delayed growth
  • low birth weight
  • an abnormally small head
These signs aren’t immediately noticeable in a newborn, but a doctor will perform tests to check for signs of any medical concerns your child may have.

The long-term outlook for people with PKU is very good if they follow a PKU meal plan closely and shortly after birth. When diagnosis and treatment are delayed, brain damage may occur. This can lead to intellectual disabilities by the child’s first year of life. Untreated PKU can also eventually cause:
  • delayed development
  • behavioral and emotional problems
  • neurological problems, such as tremors and seizures
My advise
1....  Generally I don't comment on genes or genetics
2...   Doctors or scientists will tell after seeing child  i.e. after birth..  Every couple expects a healthy child but  When the  couple see their child as defective they will be sorrow.    I cannot explain their condition .    What is the use of these scientific facts on genes or genetics after birth of defective child?
3...   My principle is to avoid defective child birth with our healthy habits, healthy food etc...
4...   First of all our Mind should be positive and we should take Water and healthy food as needed.
5...   I wish to bring this topic to you only for your knowledge and the condition of the child born from this defect.
6...   Be happy and follow healthy habits to enjoy with  your child
